Alameda is home to several publicly traded companies.

With its small-town image living large, many people assume Alameda is populated only by mom and pop stores. And yes indeed, says Patty Jacobs of the Alameda Chamber of Commerce, most of the Chamber's 400-plus members are small, independently owned businesses.

But Alameda is also home to several publicly traded companies, some with revenues in the many millions. At least eight such companies are headquartered or have major facilities in Alameda

Peet's Coffee & Tea, Inc:  Peet's, headquartered in Emeryville, opened its 135,000-square-foot coffee roastery in May of 2007 at 2001 Harbor Bay Pkwy. In addition to producing what Peetniks believe is the best coffee in the world, Peet's sells tea, specialty food items, and brewing equipment for coffee and tea. Peet's also has two retail outlets in Alameda, one on Park Street and one in Nob Hill Foods in the Bridgeside Shopping Center.  Nasdaq GS (PEET)

Celera Corporation: Founded in 1998,  Celera is headquartered at 1401 Harbor Bay Pkwy. Best known for winning the race to sequence the human genome in 2000, Celera has evolved into a developer and manufacturer of diagnostic products for hospitals and clinical laboratories. Building on its research of human genetic variability, Celera's products help health care providers personalize treatment of diseases such as cystic fibrosis. Nasdaq GS (CRA)

BioTime, Inc:  BioTime is a biotechnology company which has operated in Alameda since 1990. Located at 1301 Harbor Bay Pkwy., BioTime develops blood plasma volume expanders and blood replacement solutions to help improve outcomes for patients during surgery. Its subsidiary, Embryome Sciences, Inc., focuses on research and development of embryonic stem cell technology to find cures for heart failure, stroke and diabetes. AMEX (BTIM)

InSite Vision, Inc.  InSite Vision, founded in 1986, is an ophthalmic product development company located in the Legacy Marina Complex at 965 Atlantic Ave. Its products are used to treat eye ailments such as conjunctivitis and inflammation after eye surgery.  OTC BB (INSV.OB)

UTStarcom, Inc:  UTStarcom was started in 1990 as a telecommunications company and is located at 1275 Harbor Bay Pkwy. The company designs and manufactures networking products for telecommunications companies. UTStarcom is also an innovator in interactive television.  Nasdaq GS (UTSI)

NorCal Community Bancorp: NorCal Community Bancorp is the bank holding company for Bank of Alameda. It was founded in 1998 by Alamedan Mike Gorman to serve East Bay communities. Headquartered at 1321 Harbor Bay Pkwy., NorCal Community Bancorp provies banking services for individuals and small to mid-sized businesses in California. Wind River:  Wind River, a subsidiary of Intel Corporation, was founded in Alameda in 1981 and was acquired by Intel in 2009. Wind River is located off West Atlantic Ave. at 500 Wind River Way and  provides operating systems and development tools for embedded systems, which combine computer hardware and software to create smart technology solutions. Wind River's technology is found in millions of products, from medical equipment to cell phones. Nasdaq GS (INTC)

United States Gasoline Fund, LP:  United States Gasoline Fund is an exchange traded fund that was the first of its kind to track gasoline prices. Located at 1320 Harbor Bay Pkwy., the fund managers oversee a portfolio of gasoline futures, forward and swap contracts. NYSE (UGA) 

These eight companies will soon be joined on the island by VF Corporation, an apparel company which produces such well-known brands as Vans and The North Face.
