Injured Hiker Airlifted After Fall Near Eaton Canyon Waterfall

ALTADENA, CA - A woman in her mid-30s was airlifted from rugged terrain near the Eaton Canyon waterfall in the Altadena area Monday after she slipped and fell while hiking and ended up with a pencil lodged in her lower back.

The injury was reported near the 2200 block of Pinecrest Drive, according to the sheriff's department and Los Angeles County Fire Department.

She was climbing over some rocks when she slipped and fell and was stuck by a pencil she was carrying in her pack, according to Lt. Chad Sauter of the sheriff's Altadena Station.

The woman did not plunge from any height, but simply lost her footing and fell to the ground, Sauter said.

She is a teacher who was hiking with a colleague, according to news reports.

The woman was flown to Huntington Memorial Hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury and the incident was concluded by 1 p.m., Sauter said.
