Human bones have been found in a remote open desert area north of Cabazon, a sergeant said this weekend.
Sheriff's deputies were dispatched at 7:08 p.m. Friday to an area north of Power Line Road and west of Millard Canyon Road, in an unincorporated part of the county, about some bones that were discovered, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. James Burton said.
That general location is in San Gorgonio Pass, several miles north of the Morongo Casino. News about the find was not made public until Sunday.
Members of the sheriff's coroner's bureau were called and they later confirmed the bones were human. More bones were collected when deputies expanded their search for additional remains, Burton said.
The exact age or gender of the person, and length of time the bones were in the desert, were not immediately known, Burton said.
Deputies asked anyone who may know about the discovery to call the sheriff's Cabazon station at (951) 922-7100 or the dispatch center at 1-800-950- 2444.
