UPDATED: One Killed, Four Hurt After Head-On Crash in San Jacinto

Two victims were trapped in the wreckage and needed to be cut free, fire officials said.

One person was killed Monday and four others were injured, two of them critically, in a head-on collision northwest of San Jacinto.

The two-vehicle crash was reported at 5:27 a.m. on Sanderson Avenue, just south of Ramona Expressway, Riverside County fire spokeswoman Jennifer Fuhrman said.

One of two vehicles that collided while traveling north on Sanderson Avenue veered into the southbound lanes, where it crashed head-on into an oncoming vehicle, sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Himmelberg said.

Excessive speed appears to have been a factor in the crash, sheriff’s officials said.

Two people were taken to area hospitals in critical condition and two others suffered minor injuries, sheriff’s officials said.

Sanderson Avenue was closed several hours for the investigation.
