UPDATED: Yucaipa and Calimesa Teens Killed in Crash: CHP

The California Highway Patrol says the two girls were killed Monday night.

MENTONE, CA- Two local teenage girls were killed Monday night when they were involved in a head-on crash in Mentone, the California Highway Patrol reports.

According to CHP Officer Brian Alvarez, the crash happened around 7:17 p.m. on Sand Canyon Road when an 18-year-old from Calimesa slammed her 1993 Toyota Corolla into a 2006 Dodge Charger.

“For reasons still under investigation, the Toyota veered left into the eastbound lane and struck the Dodge head on,” Alvarez said. “This resulted in major damage to the Toyota and the Dodge.”

When emergency crews got to the scene shortly thereafter, a 16-year-old girl from Calimesa and a 17-year-old girl from Yucaipa were found fatally injured, according to Alvarez. He says both girls had been in the Toyota.  Only one of them had been wearing a seatbelt.

The 18-year-old driver of the Toyota was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center with major injuries, the CHP officer added.

“A 2007 white Chevy Tahoe driven by a 17-year-old Redlands resident was also involved in the collision but is unclear at this time how the vehicle was involved,” the officer added. “The minor was transported to Loma Linda Medical Center with minor injuries.”
