Hike the Preserve at Redwood Shores

Morning Hike Saturday 1/11/14 9:15 AM meetup at the San Carlos Library to commute to: The Preserve at Redwood Shores – “Area H” (rated EASY)

The Preserve at Redwood Shores is located off US 101, at Shearwater Parkway and Marine Parkway. The project is designed as a sustainable development balancing environmental sensitivity, community needs, and economic viability. Since the early 1900’s, the property did not contain valuable habitat, and consisted of degraded wetlands and open fields. A previous Master Plan for Redwood Shores provided for nearly 500 homes, a large marina, and extensive commercial space. Keech Properties believed that plan was too intensive, and proposed an alternative consisting of wetland restoration and construction of a new elementary school and housing, completed in 2010-2011. The area contains an extensive pathway system, allowing for an easy stroll along the perimeter of the tidal wetlands and observation of the wildlife.

For more information, go to http://keechproperties.com/pages/prjts_pr.html . Gary Deghi, Senior Biologist and Vice President of the Huffin Broadway Group will lead the hike through the restored Area H. HBG were the project lead on the restoration. He also has a key to go out on the levee. He is a member of Audubon and will be bringing his spotting scope.

The main hike is short, about one mile, and flat. The levee beyond the gate is another 3/4 mile and optional.
