It was the largest earthquake the Bay Area had seen since 1906, and at the end of those 15 horrifying seconds, the Loma Prieta quake left 63 people dead, nearly 4,000 injured and thousands homeless, and the 1989 World Series came to an abrupt halt.

As recalled by a photo essay on Huffington Post, the Loma Prieta earthquake brought the Bay Area to its knees.
