Man Shot, Killed by Long Beach Police Identified as 19-Year-Old

A suspected burglar shot and killed by Long Beach police after he allegedly stole a car in Redondo Beach, led police on a chase and then shot at officers was identified Friday.

Police identified the man as 19-year-old Christopher Taylor of Maryland.

According to police, Taylor is suspected of stealing a white BMW from a Redondo Beach home before leading California Highway Patrol officers on a chase into Long Beach shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday.

CHP officers eventually lost sight of Taylor and the vehicle he was driving after it exited the 405 Freeway at Studebaker Road.

Long Beach police officers eventually found the vehicle and pursued it until it crashed into a residence and parked vehicle in the 6400 block of East Keynote Street, authorities said.

At that point, police said they shot and killed Taylor after he allegedly brandished a handgun and shot at officers. Taylor was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said no officers were injured in the incident, which is now being independently investigated by the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office.

According to Redondo Beach police Sgt. Shawn Freeman, Taylor's alleged car occurred in the 1600 block of Morgan Lane in North Redondo Beach. Residents returning home noticed that their car keys were missing and called police.

The burglary is still under investigation, Freeman said.
