Emeryville School Board Appoints New Superintendent

John Rubio starts his new job on July 1.

Emeryville School Board Appoints New Superintendent
The Emeryville school board has approved John Rubio, currently an assistant superintendent in Santa Cruz, to be the school district's new superintendent.

School board members said the process to select Rubio was rigorous and included collaboration with community members, parents, teachers, local elected officials and union leaders.

They said Rubio, an assistant superintendent for the Live Oak School District in Santa Cruz, beat out more than 60 other applicants for the superintendent's post.

Emeryville school officials said Rubio has been an educator for more than 20 years, beginning his career as a bilingual middle school teacher in Compton and then serving as a teacher and principal in San Francisco, where he later was in charge of educational technology.

Rubio said in a statement, "At my core, I was and remain a strong teacher. It affects everything I do and perceive." Rubio said, "I look forward to learning as much as I can, as fast as I can, and to working together with our district teachers, our union leadership, parents and the school board toward improving our school district."

Rubio will begin his new job in Emeryville on July 1.
