Man Pinned Under Delivery Van In East San Jose Is Rescued

SAN JOSE - A man pinned under a delivery van that rolled over in the east foothills of San Jose was rescued and taken to a hospital Thursday afternoon, a fire captain said.

Crews responded to a requested rescue at Canyon View and Canyon Creek drives shortly after 2 p.m., fire Capt. Mitch Matlow said.

When crews reached the scene they found a white commercial delivery van down on its left side, according to Matlow.

It's not clear how the vehicle crashed, but the impact sent the victim out a window, Matlow said. The man's legs were found between the vehicle and ground while his torso was on the road, Matlow said.

Firefighters took special precautions during the rescue by using chains and steel cables to make sure the van didn't go down a slope.

They also used metal bars known as struts to keep the van from tipping on its side, according to Matlow.

A firefighter stood by with a hose in case fuel from the car sparked a fire.

The rescue team was able to lift up the vehicle and extricate the man shortly after 2:30 p.m.

The driver was transported to a trauma center, but Matlow didn't have information on the severity of the man's injuries or his condition Thursday afternoon.
