Viewfinder: East Campbell Avenue Improvement Project

Work continues, just outside of downtown Campbell.

The East Campbell Avenue Improvement project aims at “creating a more connected, attractive and functional corridor” between d owntown Campbell and the Pruneyard shopping center, according to the council's masterplan for the project.

According to the city of Campbell's website, as of March 14 the contractor for the project completed the painting of the walls and the installation and activation of the LED lights underneath the Highway 17 undercrossing.

The next major items of work will be the final installation of the traffic signal at East Campbell and Railway avenues, and the completion of the widening of the south side of the East Campbell Avenue Bridge.

The improvement project is funded by the American Recovery Reinvestment Act of 2009. The project goal is to develop a more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly passageway.

To develop the passageway, the city will have to narrow traffic lanes, widen sidewalks and install bicycle lanes and corner curb bulb-outs, which are rounded extensions of sidewalk at all intersections to shorten street-crossing distances.

Its completion is tentatively scheduled for this spring.
