Parcel Tax Ballots Due Tuesday

Voters will decide today if they want to pay an extra $90 in taxes to help local schools.

Parcel Tax Ballots Due Tuesday

Signs pepper lawns all over Capitola and Soquel both in support and in opposition to Measure S — a $90 parcel tax that would benefit the Soquel Union Elementary School District over the next eight years.

But unless Measure S garners two-thirds support, it will not pass.

Ballot are due Tuesday, May 7 for the special election. The extra tax has plenty of detractors, but among the supporters are the Capitola City Council, who voted unanimously in support, and State Senator Bill Monning.

Check out a bigger list of high profile supporters here.

Should the measure pass, the money will be used "to provide stable funding for core academic programs like reading, writing, math and science, as well as retain highly-qualified teachers in Soquel and Capitola neighborhood elementary and middle schools," the district said in February.

Stay tuned to Capitola-Soquel Patch this week as votes are counted and the results of the election are revealed.
