Carlsbad Playreaders presents Neil Simon’s Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning play Lost in Yonkers on Monday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Carlsbad Playreaders Co-Artistic Director Kathy Brombacher will direct.

Simon’s Lost in Yonkers takes place in 1942. Jay and Arty are sent to live with their stern grandmother and childlike aunt after their mother passes away. The family dynamics are intense and their struggles heartfelt as they seek to carve out a life in Yonkers.

Lost in Yonkers is my favorite of Neil Simon’s period comedies, which are also dramatic,” Brombacher said. “I was fortunate to see the original cast in New York when the play debuted. I was swept away by the characters, the setting during World War II,  and the life lessons which two young teenage boys learn about being loved and loving. To me, the play is a snapshot of American lives deeply affected by World War II, as it focuses on the lives of three generations of one family. In Lost in Yonkers, Neil Simon gives us witty one-liners and a story which will touch your heart.”

The cast includes Jo Black-Jacob, Drew Bradford, Jake Bradford, Aimee Greenberg, Ted Leib, Patrick McBride, Terri Lee Park and Doug Smith.

The play reading takes place at Carlsbad City Library’s Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium,  located at 1775 Dove Lane. Tickets are a suggested donation of $5 for adults and $1 for students. For more information, visit  www.carlsbadplayreaders.org or call 760-602-2012.

Lost in Yonkers is presented as a complement to the City of Carlsbad’s Cannon Art Gallery exhibition “Our Lives, Our Stories: America’s Greatest Generation” showcasing images, artifacts and memories from people born in the 1910s and 1920s. The Cannon Art Gallery is located at Carlsbad City Library and will be open the evening of the Lost in Yonkers reading. Admission to the gallery is free, and “Our Lives, Our Stories” will be on display through March 16.
