Poll: New York Times Covers Subway Fight

An article in "The New York Times" discusses the Westside Subway Extension and Beverly Hills' challenge to it.

Poll: New York Times Covers Subway Fight Poll: New York Times Covers Subway Fight

An article published Monday in The New York Times describes Beverly Hills High School as the latest obstacle facing the Westside Subway Extension.

The article gives an overview of the $5.6 billion Purple Line expansion project and the legal challenges Beverly Hills and its school district have filed. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa told the newspaper Beverly Hills has "a history of opposition to the subway" and safety concerns at BHHS are exaggerated.

“I don’t question the fact that there are some people who are very concerned,” Villaraigosa told The Times. “What’s happening now unfortunately is you have a number of people who are creating a climate of fear among the residents of Beverly Hills.”

Brian Goldberg, president of the Beverly Hills Unified School District, and Beverly Hills Mayor William Brien told the newspaper they are supportive of the subway and reaching a compromise with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority about the route alignment—to avoid passing under BHHS.

“It’s very easy to pick on Beverly Hills because of its reputation and people’s belief about Beverly Hills’ wealth,” Goldberg told The Times. “But the reality is we’ve been nothing but supportive of this from the get-go.”
