Online School Brings Relief to Bullied Cerritos Students
October is National Bullying Prevention Month

Every day across the country, more than 160,000 students stay home from school from fear of being bullied. From physical bullying to verbal bullying – regardless of the type, bullying is a hurtful action that can have significant negative effects on children. Bullying can cause depression; changes in mood and sleep patterns; withdrawal from family, social groups or friends; decline in school performance or lack of interest; and often much more.
The month of October is part of National Bullying Prevention Month – a nationwide effort to raise awareness to prevent bullying and help students learn how to respond to bullying.
One of the tools many kids are using to prevent and stop bullying in its tracks is to attend school online. As many as 1 in 10 students will change schools or drop out to escape bullying. A number of those students have found a safe haven in full-time, online public schools such as the California Virtual Academy @Los Angeles (CAVA).
A national survey by K12 (the curriculum provider for CAVA) found that 25% of all parents and 30% of high-school parents that are enrolled in K12 online schools cited bullying as one of the reasons why they chose to enroll. 94% of parents who enrolled their student due to bullying have found it to be very helpful in dealing with bullying issues.
Online schools are proving to be an effective solution that allow for previously bullied students to thrive once more academically, regain their self-confidence, and engage socially with other students.
