Families Say Farewell to USS Carl Vinson Sailors

The carrier departed from North Island, deploying some sailors for the first time, others more than four times.

Sailors waved goodbye to family members as the USS Carl Vinson departed Coronado Wednesday after five months back at its homeport.

The Navy aircraft carrier experienced unspecified glitches, delaying its departure by about three hours. Fog also played a role. The ship is being deployed to the western Pacific Ocean and Middle East.

Aircraft, pilots and crew of Carrier Air Wing 17 are accompanying the carrier on deployment.

Despite the weather conditions, the guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill, which will join the Vinson, got under way on time, said David Hostetler, a Naval Surface Forces public affairs officer.

He said the vessel backed out, turned into the bay and was immediately shrouded by fog.

"It looked like the cloaking device from Star Trek," Hostetler said.

The guided-missile cruiser USS Halsey also was scheduled to leave in the afternoon.
