Planning for Fiesta La Ballona

A general meeting for the extravaganza is scheduled to be held on Tuesday.

Planning for Fiesta La Ballona

While it is still months away, plans for the annual are well underway.

A meeting is scheduled for tomorrow to help plan one of the city’s biggest events of the year.

“Everyone on the committee has been working to increase attendance, especially among 21 to 39 year olds, by attracting quality vendors, popular entertainers and enhanced activities via an extensive marketing campaign that uses social media and other current marketing tools to brand and “create a buzz” for the event,” said Mike Cohen, chair of this year’s Fiesta La Ballona. “I appreciate the commitment and resources of the Culver City Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, which is the backbone of this annual fair.”

The annual event dates as far back as 1951 and began as a weeklong celebration. This year there will be a host of activities, including performances by jugglers, mimes, magicians and unicyclists interspersed with vintage Culver City service cars and bicycles.

Culver City CARES will also play a big role in the celebration, and shuttles and local bus lines will offer rides to the event from neighborhoods and nearby parking areas to make it easier for locals to attend.

In addition, tennis and paddle contests and exhibitions conducted by tennis and paddle national champions will be part of the weekend’s festivities as well as the naming of the “Madrina of the Year” by the Culver City Historical Society.

Cohen said other highlights include Culver City High School versus Beverly Hills High School rivalry water polo match and the “Aqua Lilies” who are also scheduled to perform. There will be a new Family Fun Zone this year as well.

“We want to bring together people from all walks of life to enjoy the pleasures of summer and celebrate the heritage and diversity of Culver City in a fun and safe event,” Cohen said.

Fiesta La Ballona will take place August 24-26 at . This week’s planning meeting is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. tomorrow in the Iksan Room at .
