Coroner IDs Bicyclist Found Unconscious West Of Saratoga

A bicyclist found unconscious west of Saratoga died at a San Jose hospital on Monday, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

He was identified today as 72-year-old Robert Brushwyler of Cupertino, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office. Brushwyler appeared to be an avid bicyclist who was found in full gear and was riding an expensive bike, CHP Officer Ross Lee said.

Around 4:50 p.m. Monday, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office notified CHP officers of a cyclist who was down on the shoulder of Mount Eden Road just past Orchard Meadow Drive, Lee said.

A passerby had spotted the bicyclist and notified authorities, Lee said. Sheriff’s deputies, CHP officers and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene, where they found the bicyclist unresponsive and not breathing, according to Lee.

Emergency crews performed CPR on the bicyclist, later identified as Brushwyler, and transported him to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, where he was pronounced dead, Lee said.

Officers did not find Brushwyler with obvious signs of trauma and his bicycle was not damaged, Lee said.

Officers initially believed Brushwyler suffered a heart attack, but blood test results came back negative, he said. Investigators do not believe the death stemmed from a hit-and-run collision and are looking into the possibility that he was involved in a solo crash, according to Lee.
