Families Cultivate Learning through School Choice

I’ve been an educator for 15 years and am very optimistic about the future of education in California, due in part to each family’s ability to choose the education option that’s best for their children. Families have a  diverse range of quality education options available for children in grades K-12. Students these days can attend a traditional brick-and-mortar public school, a private school, be homeschooled, or attend a virtual public school such as Capistrano Connections Academy. Education is no longer one-size-fits-all; not every educational institution is the right fit for every child. That’s why I am thankful for learning options for all types of students.

Given Capistrano Connections Academy’s upcoming enrollment period for the 2014-15 school year, now is a great time for families to explore which education option is best for their children. For example, students who are hospitalized or homebound, training to be actors or professional athletes, or learn at a faster or slower pace can benefit from individualized learning plans and from a school environment outside of traditional classroom walls.

I have seen parents and students learn more about the education options available to their family by visiting schools, shadowing students, attending information sessions and school fairs, and speaking with other families. Flexibility in location and program offerings, such as after-school programs, tutoring, technology and innovative curriculum, have sparked school district partnerships and ultimately benefited communities as a whole.

I am proud to serve as principal of Capistrano Connections Academy, where 93 percent of parents would recommend the program to other parents. I encourage families that are interested in online school to take a look at our website or attend an upcoming information session—in-person or online. I’m always happy to answer questions about our school, too, so please feel free to leave a comment and I’ll get back to you soon!
