A man who allegedly fired shots at sheriffs deputies on the Pomona (60) Freeway in Industry was in custody today, facing possible charges of attempted murder of a peace officer.

The 20-year-old man was alleged to have fired at deputies in a Los Angeles County sheriff's vehicle as the deputies were about to pull him over on the westbound Pomona Freeway around 10:25 p.m. Wednesday, before speeding away, sheriff's officials said.

Sgt. N. Gutierrez of the sheriff's Industry station said the suspect's vehicle, a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, was believed to have been in front of the sheriff's vehicle when the shots were fired.

The suspect's vehicle was stopped by California Highway Patrol officers in a transition lane from the southbound San Gabriel (605) Freeway to the Artesia (91) Freeway shortly after the shooting, she said.

The man, whose name was not released, was booked on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer, said Lt. R. Enriquez of the Industry Station.
