Horse Stables at Alameda County Fairgrounds Closing in January

The thoroughbreds will move to Berkeley in January and will likely return in May.

PLEASANTON, CA — Almost 275 thoroughbred race horses currently living in the Alameda County Fairgrounds stables will be moving from Pleasanton to Berkeley in January, Angel Moore, the fair's marketing and communications manager said.

The 274 horses will take up residence at Golden Gate Fields when the Tri-Valley training operations at the fairgrounds close on Jan. 15, 2017.

“Golden Gate Fields has recently increased the number of stalls they have on property to 1,500, which will accommodate the horse population and they say they will no longer need Pleasanton,” Moore told Patch by email. “Pleasanton was used as an auxiliary training and stabling facility starting in 2008 after the closure of Bay Meadows.”

Pleasanton’s racing season is in the summer and fall. Moore says the stables, which will be cleaned and prepared for the return of the horses, will reopen on May 1 before the start of the Pleasanton’s Live Horse Racing, which starts in June. Fall racing will continue and off-track betting will be available all year.

The RV park on the property will not be affected by the changes at the stabling and training facility.
