Kensington's Judy Sanders – Elementary Principal of the Year for WCCUSD

Kensington Hilltop Elementary School Principal Judy Sanders has been chosen as Principal of the Year for elementary schools in the large West Contra Costa County Unified School District.

The honor, bestowed by the Richmond Association of School Administrators, is the same one that Portola Middle School Principal Matthew Burnham just received for middle school principals in the district.

The distinctions also qualify Sanders and Burnham to be considered for the statewide Principal of the Year award.

"How wonderful for our El Cerrito/Kensington community to have such recognized achievers of the district right here!" said Romy Douglass, president of the Kensington school PTA.

Sanders has a long history as a educator in the district, having been a teacher in what was then called the Richmond Unified School District four decades ago. At Kensington, she was a parent many years ago, served as PTA president and took up substitute teaching before becoming a full-time teacher on the way to becoming principal.

"I'm absolutely honored and humbled because I'm in a group of people I very much respect," she said. "The people I work with every day deserve part of it because everybody at Kensington works very, very hard."
