Craftsman New American Tavern opened its doors Tuesday afternoon, and by dinnertime there was already a full house. It was evident a lot of locals have been eager to find out what’s in store at the new eatery, which was created by New Encinitas residents Wade and Kristi Hageman—the same masterminds behind Blue Ribbon Pizzeria.

The menu offers hand-crafted comfort foods, including merlot-braised short ribs, goat cheese agnolotti, free-range chicken, center-cut Hangar steak, Colorado lamb sirloin, burgers made with grass-fed beef and porcini crusted Pacific cod and Berkshire pork porchetta. Those dishes range from about $14 to $27. Entrees come with sides, but for an extra $5 to $7, you can add extra side dishes, like Yukon gold potato puree, deep-fried Brussels sprouts, summer bean almondine, herb roasted fingerling potatoes, local sweet corn and macaroni and cheese made with fontina, asiago and Pt. Reyes blue cheese.

There’s also a handful of salads that range $9 to $12, and several artisan cheeses, salamis and charcuterie, which go for $9 if you want the half order and $12 to $15 for the full.

Appetizers include local Albacore crudo, duck fat fries, oysters on the half shell, crispy pork belly, heirloom black seed popcorn, fried shishito peppers, chicken liver mousse, a trio of 'meatmen' sausage, and local sweet corn soup. Most of those run about $7 to $12.

For dessert you’ll find bittersweet chocolate tarts with salted caramel, root beer cake, and the same popular butterscotch pudding from Blue Ribbon Pizzeria. Those all run about $7.

There’s also bar snacks, which are served all day. Those offerings include Pabst Blue Ribbon cheese fondue with pretzel bread, deviled eggs with Serrano ham, an oyster po' boy sandwich, local spiny lobster corn dogs, and pulled pork sliders. Those will run you $8 to $10.

For the first month of operation, Craftsman New American Tavern will open at 3:30 p.m. for happy hour and dinner every day, except Monday. After that, service will be extended to include lunch, happy hour, and dinner every day of the week—plus brunch on the weekends.

Happy hour runs daily from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Specials include: $2 discounts on bar snacks and classic cocktails, $3 craft beer ‘shorties’ and Pabst Blue Ribbon ‘tall boys’, $6 select wines, $7 house-infused martinis, $6 specialty cocktails and butterscotch pudding.

The beer list includes several local brews, like Sculpin IPA by Ballast Point, Golden Ale by Coronado Brewing Company, Cali-Belgique by Stone and Julian Hard Cider, just to name a few. The wine list includes nearly two dozen labels, and about ten classic cocktails.

is located at 267 El Camino Real Suite A & B.
