Daughter to Receive Purple Heart at Los Alamitos for Father, a WWII POW

The medal will honor Sgt. Rodney A. Williams, who was taken prisoner after his bomber was shot down near Berlin in WWII.

The daughter of a survivor of the shooting down of Army Air Force B-17 “Lady Jane II” bomber over Berlin near the end of World War II will receive his Purple Heart Wednesday at Los Alamitos Army Airfield.

The presentation to Lorraine Manatt, the daughter of Sgt. Rodney A. Williams, will be made by Air Force Maj. Gen. Robert D. McMurry Jr. at 10 a.m. Wednesday, the 70th anniversary of the plane being shot down.

Williams spent the remainder of the war in a prison camp. He returned to the United States after the war and served at Los Alamitos Army Airfield.

The presentation will include full military honors on the airfield’s flight line.

“There is no expiration date when it comes to recognizing the valor of our servicemen and women,” McMurry said
