Revived Man Dies After Days in Critical Condition

After nearly a week in the hospital battling severe injuries from a crash on Highway 101 in Gilroy on Nov. 1, a 78-year-old San Martin man has died.

The man was a passenger along with a 77-year-old San Martin woman in a Nissan Pathfinder driven by a 21-year-old woman. According to CHP Officer Erica Elias, the Pathfinder traveled at a dangerous speed on Leavesley Road approaching the 101 on-ramp.

When the car reached the highway, the driver lost control on the wet road, drifted across all three lanes, spun around and collided with a truck, sending it into the center divider.

The San Martin man was initially pronounced dead on the scene, but emergency personnel were later able to revive him and transport him to the hospital where he remained until his death this week.

The 77-year-old woman is still in critical condition at the hospital, Elias said in an email.

The driver and passenger of the truck were not hurt in the accident.
