Boy's Leg Amputated, More Surgeries to Come

Zach Rowe's pelvis was crushed by a fallen tree while camping near Pescadero. Doctors have removed his right leg.

Boy's Leg Amputated, More Surgeries to Come

When a tree crashed down on Zachary Rowe as he slept in a tent at Memorial Park near Pescadero July 25, it caused so much damage to his right pelvis and leg that the 12-year-old's right leg was amputated.

The surgery Tuesday at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto was not the first, nor will it be the last, according to Zach's hometown newspaper in Prescott, Arizona, The Daily Courier.

The paper quotes family members who say that Zach's left leg and pelvis were also damaged, along with his kidneys. When he recovers, they expect Zach to be in a wheelchair.

There's no word on when Zach will be released from the hospital.
