CHP Clears San Gregorio Woman in Fatal HMB Crash

A Peninsula woman who was initially blamed for a head-on collision on Highway 1 earlier this year that left a 20-year-old college student dead has been cleared for her role in the crash, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

Julie Schreiber, a 54-year-old school teacher from of San Gregorio, was the driver of a  Dodge Caravan that according to an swerved into oncoming traffic, colliding with a Honda Civic.

The collision occurred south of Miramontes Point Road on Highway 1 on May 5, just before midnight.

Kathryn "Katie" Habenicht, a 20-year-old  San Jose State student who was the driving the Civic, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Schreiber was airlifted to Stanford Medical Center with major injuries and was listed in critical condition. She continues to recover from her injuries and has accumulated over $1 million in medical bills, the Mercury reports.

The CHP has determined she was not at fault for the accident.

According to the Mercury, CHP investigators determined that an initial report stating that she was traveling north on Highway 1 was inaccurate - that she in fact was driving in the opposite direction.

According to the Mercury report, Schreiber's father provided investigators information indicating that his daughter had used an ATM in Half Moon Bay minutes before the crash.

A fund has been established to help Schreiber pay her medical bills, the Mercury reports. Donations to the Julie Schreiber Recovery Fund can be made to Well Fargo account number 9298620932.
