Local Teen Demonstrates Artistic Talents at New School

The days might be getting shorter and darker, but 16 colorful mosaic squares now brighten the courtyard at Waldorf School of the Peninsula’s Mountain View campus.

Produced by faculty and students during the high school’s annual back-to-school retreat at Redwood Glen in Loma Mar, the art installation includes the talents of Half Moon Bay artist and Waldorf ninth grader, Emma Evenari.

The essence of mosaic is using several individual pieces to create a whole. This particular piece embodies a dance between form and freedom, a theme highly relevant to the academic and developmental work of Waldorf education. The form of the square is very clearly defined as a container for the freedom and creativity that are expressed within.

The project’s thematic focus on the elements — earth, water, fire and air — was inspired by another retreat activity with local storyteller, Jerry Falek. Falek encouraged participants to explore the essence of nature and the elements through poetry, stories and skits. These exercises led to the manifestation of this piece, where four individuals collaborated on each individual square.

Entering a new high school can be daunting, but 14-year-old Evenari feels right at home at this school that incorporates the arts into every aspect of it rigorous academic curriculum. Her talents have been featured in previous Half Moon Bay Review stories about raising funds with her drawings for the Snow Leopard Conservancy and Senior Coastsiders.
