While the waves never materialized to hold this year's highly anticipated contest, Mavericks Invitational organizers are still finding reason to celebrate.
Mavericks surfers, surfing fans and the greater Half Moon Bay community are gathering on the grounds of the just north of Half Moon Bay in Princeton to cap the end of the '11-'12 season with music, food, and a celebration of the feats at the big wave break itself.
The highlight of the day will be the presentation the first-ever Mavericks awards. Surfers will be honored in the following categories:
- Mavericks Barrel of the Year
- Mavericks Bomb of the Year
- Mavericks Photo of the Year
- Mavericks Female Performer of the Year
- Mavericks Performance of the Year
- 5150 Award (for the most "insane" wave of the year at Mavericks)
A video on a Jumbotron screen of Mavericks legends will bring the waves as close as can be to the middle of the festival.
Attendees will also be able to listen to local bands, including Barfight (San Francisco) and the Expendables (Santa Cruz). Both will take the stage in the afternoon.
Hungry festivalgoers can eat food from on-site vendors or Crab Landing, or patronize any of the many businesses surrounding the festival grounds and Princeton Harbor.
Those who attend will have opportunities to meet Mavericks surfers, take photographs and get autographs, according to Mavericks Invitational spokeswoman Jessica Banks.
The Mavericks Festival takes place from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Mar. 31 on the grounds of the Oceano Hotel (west of Capistrano and Highway 1). Parking is $10 at the off Highway 1 further north. Tickets will be sold at the gate for $40.
