Sustainable San Mateo County (SSMC) is proud to announce the winners of this year’s 14th Annual Sustainability and Green Building Awards, held in memory of Ruth Peterson, longtime SSMC supporter and former board chair who passed away last June.

The theme this year, Education—The Root of Sustainability, celebrates the importance of education in creating sustainable citizens and communities.

“Our recipients and all the nominees display the passion and dedication to the community that we’ve come to expect over the years. We look forward to sharing their inspiring stories,” said Adrienne Etherton, SSMC executive director.

Among the winners? Sonrisas Community Dental Center in Half Moon Bay.

Sonrisas opened its doors in 2001 to provide access to affordable dental care for low-income San Mateo Coastside residents. Serving 1,200 patients through 4,100 visits in 2012, Sonrisas aims to restore dental health to people in need through preventative education. Their outreach efforts target hundreds of at-risk children each year. Volunteer dental professionals visit Coastside elementary schools, including those in Cabrillo Unified School District and La Honda Pescadero Unified School District, to screen children for oral health. The oral health education efforts also include screening at the Women, Infant, and Child Social Services Office (WIC) and evening education for pre-natal women focusing on dental issues during pregnancy.

Here’s a list of all the recipients:
