Update: Pedestrian Killed in Silver Lake ID'd

LAPD Lieutenant Mike Menza says pedestrian fatalities are frequent in the city of Los Angeles.

Updated Sunday: The EastsiderLA reports that an official with the county coroner’s office identified the victim as 24-year-old Ashley Sandau of Canyon Country.

Previously: A 24-year-old woman died Friday night after being struck by a vehicle as she attempted to cross the street.

The incident took place at on the 2800 block of Rowena Ave. at 10:30 p.m., just in front of trendy gastropub , where according to LAPD Lieutenant Mike Menza the victim had frequented prior to the fatal accident.

"She was walking to her car and got hit," Menza said. "Unfortunately, this is something that we deal with a lot."

The driver of the vehicle was detained and released. According to Menza, it had been determined that no crime had been committed, and visibility may have been the cause.

Menza said the victim was not in a crosswalk when the incident occured, and also added that pedestrian fatalities are the leading type of traffic fatalities in the city.
