200 Years Ago 200 Years Ago

Rabbi Mendy Paltiel is the Rabbi at Chabad of Laguna Niguel.

This Sunday, was the 24th of Tevet, the 200th yahrzeit of Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder of Chabad Chasidic Movement and Philosophy.

Rabbi Shneur Zalman opened a new path which allowed the teaching of the previously hidden aspects of the Torah - the Kabbalah and the Zohar - to be comprehended and internalized. (The name Chabad is an acronym of three Hebrew words, Chochma, Bina & Daat - Wisdom, Understanding and Knowledge).

Rabbi Shneur Zalman was not only a master in the area of the more esoteric aspects of the Torah, he was considered, even as a young child, a great scholar of the revealed parts of the Torah (the written and oral Torah) as well.

This is alluded to in Rabbi Shneur Zalman's name. Shneur, can be broken up into two Hebrew words, "Shnei" and "ohr" meaning "two lights." Rabbi Shneur Zalman illuminated the world with his greatness in the two lights of the Torah (the esoteric and revealed).

The entire purpose, in fact, of the revelation of Chasidic philosophy was to hasten and prepare the world for the Era of Moshaich.

In Rabbi Shneur Zalman's magnum opus, Tanya, he writes: "The Era of Moshiach... is the fulfillment and culmination of the creation of the world, for which purpose it was originally created." This means that our spiritual service will reach its full completion only with the fulfillment and culmination of the entire creation which will take place when Moshiach is revealed.

Thus, when each one of us studies Chassidic teachings, whether the more sublime aspects or the most esoteric concepts, we prepare ourselves and the world around us for Moshiach.

Shabbat Shalom!
