A bicyclist was fatally injured Wednesday when struck by a vehicle in Lakeland Village, according to witnesses.

Area resident Christopher Morgan told Patch he came upon the crash while driving home.

The crash occurred near the corner of Grand Avenue and Baldwin Boulevard, Patch learned.

The vehicle was a pickup truck, Morgan said.

An hour after the crash, the mangled bicycle could be seen outside the All American Appliance service store.

According to David Scranton, who lives down the street from where the crash occurred, he heard a loud noise as he sat in his living room.

"I didn't hear no brakes or anything," Scranton told Patch.

"It was a loud 'bam.'"

Looking out his door, Scranton saw a smashed bicycle and then, farther down the street, saw a man lying in the road.

He called emergency dispatchers, then walked to the man, phone in hand.

"I put my hand on his chest while I was on the phone with 911 and … I could feel a heartbeat but no breath at all," he said.

Morgan said that medics worked on the injured man unsuccessfully, declaring him dead at the scene.

"Witnesses at the scene saw the bicyclist enter the lines of traffic quickly, leaving no time for the driver of the pickup truck to avoid the collision," Morgan wrote to Patch in an email.

The cause of the crash -- as is policy -- was under investigation.

The California Highway Patrol could not immediately be reached for comment.
