Canyon Lake Man Who Allegedly Swam From Cops Enters Plea

A Canyon Lake man who allegedly burglarized a home, then swam the lake to avoid capture by deputies, pleaded not guilty Monday to burglary and grand theft, court records show.

Ryan Patrick Harper, 29, also denied two prison priors that allegedly occurred within five years of each other, according to court records.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Becky Dugan set bail at $75,000 and ordered the suspect back to court Sept. 19.

A preliminary hearing was tentatively set for Sept. 21.

Deputies on Sept. 6 were sent to a burglary in progress in the 22200 block of
Whirlaway Court in Canyon Lake. The thief -- believed to be Harper -- escaped capture by allegedly swimming across Canyon Lake, a sheriff's sergeant said.

A check of local pawn shops led investigators to a Lake Elsinore business, where Harper was found, the sergeant said.

In 2001 Harper was charged with grand theft, vandalism, damaging an electrical line and robbery. That case was closed, according to court records.

In 2006 he was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism; that case is also closed and disposition information was not available, court records indicate.
