Sheriff's deputies staffing a checkpoint in Lake Elsinore Friday night collared a Pizza Hut delivery man allegedly driving under the influence of marijuana.

Jeremy White, 21, of Menifee, was taken into custody just before 11:30 p.m. because deputies determined he was high on marijuana, officials said.

The deputies -- the checkpoint was established at 8 p.m. -- had screened about 700 vehicles by 11 p.m. and hoped to examine at least 1,500 by 3 a.m. Saturday morning, sheriff's Sgt. Marc Cloutier said.

"Traffic has been sporadic," Cloutier told Patch late Friday.

"It comes and goes in spurts throughout the evening."

The sergeant said he hopes all those screened this weekend will tell their friends.

"We hope everyone in the vehicle stopped tells a friend 'be careful, the police are looking for you,'" Cloutier said.

"The message is pretty simple. Driving impaired is against the law. It’s highly dangerous. The point that we’re trying to get out to everybody is simply, don’t," Cloutier said.

Funding for DUI operations in Riverside County come from the state Office of Traffic Safety, officials said.
