
LAKE MATHEWS, CA — An investigation was underway Tuesday into the circumstances behind the death of a woman whose body was located in the hills just north of Lake Mathews.
The remains were found at about 9 a.m. Saturday by hunters in the area of McAllister Street and El Sobrante Road, just south of the Riverside city limits, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Sgt. Richard Carroll said that hunters stumbled onto the remains and immediately called 911.

There were no clear indications of what happened at the scene, or of how the victim, whose identity has not been confirmed, might have died, according to Carroll.
He also could not say how long the body had been there.

Central Homicide Unit detectives were summoned to take over the investigation.
An autopsy was pending.
