A Look at Outsourcing by Lafayette Government

State Supreme Court decision on city government services unlikely to affect Lafayette much, city manager says.

A Look at Outsourcing by Lafayette Government

Lafayette City Manager Steve Falk talks about Lafayette's extensive outsourcing in an article taking a look at a recent court decision about civic services.

Falk said he watched closely the progress of court decisions involving Costa Mesa in Southern California, which had controversies over city layoffs that were part of an ambitious plan to extend outsourcing. The California Supreme Court last month affirmed an appeals court ruling against Costa Mesa's outsourcing designs, explored in a long news feature by Thomson Reuters News & Insight.

Falk said Lafayette will likely not be affected by the appeals court decision.

Thomson Reuters reports: "Lafayette's police department is staffed by the county sheriff. Uniformed city work crews are employees of private contractors. They also handle street cleaning, traffic signal operations, printing, garbage pick-up and emergency planning.

"We contract for everything. It's easier to tell you what we don't contract for than what we contract for," said Falk.
