Orinda police arrested 62-year-old James Collin of Orinda on June 26 in connection with the death of his 56-year-old live-in girlfriend, Evangeline Devera, killed in the residence they shared on Moraga Way. Although the official cause of death was given as "blunt force" trauma and "sharp force injury" to Devera's head, authorities said the victim appeared to have been slashed several times with a machete before the killing blow was delivered.
