The California Highway Patrol received a report around 11:10 a.m. Thursday that a bicyclist was down in the roadway on Altamont Pass Road near Carroll Road and found Segrest. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. According to the CHP, Segrest had apparently been riding up Carroll Road and was hit by a full-size van after he failed to stop at a stop sign.

The driver involved in the collision stopped at the scene and cooperated with investigators. A stretch of Altamont Pass Road was temporarily closed in both directions Thursday while the CHP investigated.
