UPDATE: Man Arrested After Breaking Into Kathy Way Home

A Castro Valley man has been arrested after breaking into a home on the 5400 block of Kathy Way this morning, said Lt. Matt Sarsfield.

At around 10 a.m. police were sent to the area near for a report of an unknown person entering a home. The school was temporarily placed on lockdown while police responded.

A resident in the home said she heard a pounding noise at the side of her house. She locked herself in a room and called police, Sarsfield said.

Police were quickly able to surround the neighborhood and at about 10:25 a.m. the suspect fled from the front door and headed westbound on Kathy Way, Sarsfield said.

"He bolted out of the home with some property," Sgt. Todd Madrid said.

The 19-year-old suspect, identified as Brian Hayes, was detained moments later near an apartment complex on Norma Way, Sarsfield said.

Hayes was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Police also found a backpack and other items in the home that belonged to Hayes.

A neighbor said Hayes was seen earlier in the week in the area.
