Hundreds Of Burning Pumpkins Block 5 Freeway In Semi-Truck Fire

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert near the Grapevine Wednesday when hundreds of flaming pumpkins poured into the roadway.

LOS ANGELES, CA — The smell of pumpkin pie wafted across the Grapevine Wednesday morning when a semi-tuck carrying hundreds of pumpkins burst into flames. Flaming pumpkins poured into the roadway, triggering a SigAlert that backed up traffic for miles.

The pumpkin blaze broke out shortly after 2 a.m. and blocked the southbound lanes of the Golden State (5) Freeway at Smoky Bear Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The clean-up effort took hours. All lanes were reopened shortly after 11 a.m., the CHP reported.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the fire, which remained under investigation Wednesday.
