18-Year-Old Dies in LAPD-Involved Shooting in South Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA — An 18-year-old man has died following an officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday in the Westmont neighborhood of South Los Angeles.

The incident began as a police chase around 1 p.m. According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, the 18-year-old man who was reportedly armed, was shot after a police pursuit of a vehicle that was believed to be stolen.

Sgt. Barry Montgomery told reporters at the scene officers began the pursuit when a vehicle with paper plates failed to stop at police's orders. A passenger got out of the car at 106th and Montgomery and was shot by police just a block away at 107th and Montgomery towards the back of a house. The details leading up to the shooting were not immediately clear.

In a news release published Sunday, the Los Angeles Police Department said two Black men exited the car and fled in different directions. Officers focused on one of the suspects, chasing him to the back of the house where he was fatally shot.

A gun was recovered at the scene. No officers were injured in the shooting.

Family members identified the man shot and Killed to the LA Times. They said he lived on the same street where he was shot.

A crowd angered by the killing of the young man gathered at the scene of the shooting.
