Surf's Up: Seal Beach Surf Contest Is On

City staff reveal the dates of the Katin Surf Shop Seal Beach Surfing Championships.

Surf's Up: Seal Beach Surf Contest Is On

Better get your boards ready.

The official dates for the annual  Katin Surf Shop Seal Beach Surfing Championships were announced last night. The contest begins Saturday and Sunday.

“I just found out today,” said Seal Beach Marine Safety Chief Joe Bailey. “We’re expecting three-to-four foot surf Saturday and 6-foot surf Sunday.”

Bailey said that the contest -- held through the Seal Beach Life Guard Association and Katin Surf Shop -- brings out a lot of Seal Beach-based wave riders.

“Local surfers come out for a great vibe,” Bailey said.

This year, the event will be sponsored by a number of organizations  Body Glove, the Surfrider Foundation and the Yucatan Grill.

There’s a $40 entry fee, which pays for a t-shirt and a plate at the dinner banquet. Sign-up forms are available at local sponsors – Katin Surf Shop, Harbour Surfboards, Inflight Surf Shop, Yucatan Grill, and Lifeguard Headquarters (888 Ocean Ave).

Competitors can also go to the website: sbsurfcontest.com and download an entry form.

2013 Seal Beach Surfing Championships divisions will consist of:

  • Men’s Open Shortboard
  • Men’s Open Longboard
  • Master’s Shortboard
  • Master’s Longboard
  • Seniors Open
  • Women Open
  • Juniors
  • Grom
  • Menhune

According to the event website, the event has raised thousands for local charities including J.H. McGaugh Elementary and Project SEEK.

Last year, the Seal Beach Life Guard Association raised $5,000.00 at the event, which they donated to the Seal Beach Victim’s Fund to help those who had lost loved ones in the salon shooting massacre.

This year, the proceeds from the event will go to “Walk on Water” children’s based charity that provides therapy to special needs children through surfing.
