Following a popular trend, the Leadership class of Los Gatos High School recently created a lip dub video with the goal of boosting school spirit and pride.
A lip dub is essentially a montage of students lip synching to popular songs. It combines lip synching with audio dubbing, or the overlaying of audio into the video during the video editing process.
Often in lip dubs, the camera follows the lip synchers as they walk or dance backwards, usually with other students in the background, while traveling through hallways, classrooms, and buildings.
Due to the fact that they are usually filmed in one continuous unedited shot, lip dubs require tremendous preparation and coordination.
In the case of LGHS’s lip dub, the popular song “Party in the U.S.A.” by Miley Cyrus was selected by students after a voting process.
Various student groups and organizations were invited to participate, including sports teams, the newspaper and yearbook classes, and various clubs.
According to rising junior and former sophomore class Spirit Officer Anna Silva, there were “easily 400 students participating”.
The motivation to create a LGHS lip dub came from other popular lip dubs, such as this one ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_01wJMrfLOM) done by Lakewood High School, which featured over 2,000 students and has received over 600,000 views to date.
As Silva notes, “we’d seen other lip dubs done by other schools and thought, ‘our school is way cooler than those schools, so let’s prove it!’”.
The lip dub was filmed during a 40-minute tutorial, with a practice run preceding the final version. To keep students organized, the song was broadcast throughout the school using the P.A. system.
The video was shot and edited by students Chance Molenda and Emily Kessler, and the Leadership class orchestrated the event.
The video was made public at the school spirit rally on April 4, and has received over 7,000 views on Youtube.
