Donate Blood Monday in Manhattan Beach During Battle of Badges Blood Drive

Community members can donate blood in Manhattan Beach Monday during the annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive, a partnership between the Manhattan Beach Police Department and American Red Cross.

The Battle of the Badges is an opportunity for all badge-carrying personnel and their friends, family and neighbors to see who can donate the most blood and help save lives. Last year, the Manhattan Beach Police Department collected 43 pints of blood from 54 participants.

“As police officers, the protection of life is our duty, and this is a very personal way in which we can help save a life," said Chief of Police Eve R. Irvine, who donated last year.

According to the Red Cross, blood supplies used for accident victims, cancer patients, premature babies and burn patients, among others, typically fall to critically low levels during the winter months.

The American Red Cross, a charity that depends on voluntary contributions of time, money and blood to perform its humanitarian mission, provides relief to victims of disasters at home and abroad, collects and distributes nearly half of the nation's blood supply, teaches lifesaving skills, and supports military members and families.M

Monday's blood donation event takes place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at 420 15th St. in the Manhattan Beach police/fire community room. Donors will receive a free American Red Cross T-shirt, a coupon for a free appetizer from Mimi's Cafe and a voucher for two Laugh Factory tickets. Please bring identification when you donate. It is required.
