The Special Olympics are about to get underway and our new friends from around the globe will be departing our South Bay Host Towns after a few days of getting to ‘live like locals’. The two final community events take place tonight and they’re going to be FANTASTIC! Let’s give them a memorable South Bay send-off and wish our competitors good luck at the Games!
The community is invited to REACH UP and join Host Town Redondo Beach for aParade & Beach Party to celebrate the Special Olympics World Games athletes on Thursday July 23. The Parade will take place at the Redondo Pier and will begin at 5:45 p.m. near Old Tony’s. The event includes 330 athletes and coaches from Benin, Haiti and Suriname. The Parade will end at the Seaside Lagoon for a beach party from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. There will be barbeque, live music and other beach-centric entertainment. The Redondo Beach Pier is located at the western end of Torrance Boulevard. The Seaside Lagoon is located at 200 Portofino Way in Redondo Beach.
Join Host Town Manhattan Beach and the Rotary Club of Manhattan Beach for aPicnic in the Park with Special Olympics World Games athletes from Hungary and Nepal. The event is open to the public and will take place on Thursday, July 23 in Polliwog Park from 5 to 8 p.m. with live entertainment by Thin Ice (that’s Russ Lesser’s band!). Attendees may contribute to the fundraising effort and purchase ticketed seating for $100 per person. The ticket will buy you a seat at a table with delegates as well as a delicious meal courtesy of participating local restaurants. The picnic dinner is provided by Brewco, The Strand House, Rock N’ Fish and Zinc @ Shade. Seating is limited and tickets must be purchased on Eventbrite athttp://www.eventbrite.com/event/17388244708. Attendees may also choose open seating and bring their own picnic, blanket and chairs. No ticket or RSVP required. Bring the whole family for a fun evening celebrating the Host Town Manhattan Beach athletes! This summer, Ruby’s Diner is sponsoring a brand new community tradition, Movies at the Lagoon. On select Friday nights during July and August, Seaside Lagoon will play host for this new summer movie series. The films will begin at 8:15 p.m. and attendees should bring beach chairs and blankets. On Friday, July 24, Steven Spielberg’s ET will be screened. Food for purchase will be available from the Ruby’s Diner takeout window. The movies are free of charge and open to the public. The Torrance Community Services Department will be sponsoring the ever-popularMovies in the Park program again this summer. The second movie in the series isHairspray, which will be shown on Saturday, July 25 at Greenwood Park. The movie will begin at dusk, approximately 8 p.m. Prior to the start of the movie, a craft activity will be available for the children. The program is open to the public and is free of charge. Village Care International presents South Bay Girls Day Out 2015 on Saturday July 25 from 1 to 5 p.m. at MBS Media Campus. South Bay Girls Day Out will be a fun-filled day like no other, featuring pampering stations (nails, skin care, braid bar, etc.), lots of shopping at brand booths, fashion runway show and of course, champagne and small bites! The day will be the ultimate girl’s day, celebrating the strength and spirit of the women of Village Care International, and invites supporters to contribute to the organization’s life-altering mission. Sunday Funday Marina Concert & Cookout is back for the season at BALEENkitchen! The event takes place the last Sunday of each month. Guests are invited to stop by the BALEENkitchen fire pits and outdoor lounge/dining area overlooking the Redondo Marina from 3 to 6 p.m. The event will feature live music, gourmet burger bar, beer garden and more! The build-your-own-burger bar will offer a choice of beef patty, chicken breast or Portobello mushroom grilled to perfection which guests can then customize with an array of garnishes. The burgers are $7 each; domestic beers are $3; well drinks and house wine are $4; and margaritas and The Dudes’ Micro Brewery Draft are $5. Buffalo Fire Department presents the South Bay Open Blues Jam on Sunday, July 26 from noon to 4 p.m. The monthly jam session will take place the last Sunday of every month and local musicians are encouraged to sit in. Enjoy great eats and drinks while listening to some rockin’ blues and the best part….there’s no cover charge! Spread the word and come on down for a new way to spend Sunday Funday! St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church presents the Garden Concert Series: Duo Ondineon Sunday, July 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. Duo Ondine was recently selected by the Beverly Hills Auditions as one of the top chamber groups in Los Angeles. Founded in 2005 by Alison Bjorkedal (harp) and Boglarka Kiss (flute), their performances feature cherished repertoire in addition to new works by local composers. To celebrate the duo’s 10th anniversary, they’ll be premiering their new works throughout Southern California. This is the second FREE concert of the season and guests are invited to arrive early and picnic on the lawn. Coffee and dessert hosted by St. Luke’s. The City of El Segundo Recreation & Parks Department is proud to present the2015 Summer Concerts in the Park series sponsored by Chevron. These free concerts take place on select Sunday evenings at Library Park located at the 600 block of Main Street in beautiful downtown El Segundo. Activities begin at 4 p.m. with the music starting at 4:30 and running until 6 p.m. Gourmet food trucks will be on site and kids can stop by the gazebo for free face painting and arts & crafts provided by Camp Cowabungo Day Camp. The Lunada Bay Homeowners Association presents the Summer Concert Series in Lunada Bay Park on select Sundays. The concerts get underway at 5 p.m. each evening so be sure to bring a picnic dinner and enjoy a wonderful evening in the park with family and friends. The event also features a raffle and prizes. Ruby’s Diner will commemorate the birthday of namesake Ruby Cavanaugh who turns 93 this year. This morning we’re going to discuss the Charlie Saikley Volleyball Tournament, better known as Six Man, that kicks off the International Surf Festival every year.
