The search continues for Rebecca Weiss, a 50-year-old Marina del Rey woman who was diving in Palos Verdes that has been missing since Aug. 11.
The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search as of sunset on Sunday, but the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's attempts to locate the woman are still ongoing.
She was snorkeling alone near the Terranea Resort, located at 6610 Palos Verdes Drive South in Rancho Palos Verdes, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
She was expected to come home at 5 p.m, but when she failed to return, her husband drove to the dive site that the couple frequents often to try to find her, according to a spokesperson for the Sheriff's Department.
He located some of her belongings, but not his wife. He called the Sheriff’s Department around 11 p.m. on Aug. 11.
A Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles and a response boat from Station Los Angeles-Long Beach searched throughout the night, in addition to a Coast Guard cutter from Corona del Mar, according to the Coast Guard. A Baywatch Cabrillo boat crew and an LASD helicopter searched during the night.
According to Shareen Ghabrial, who lives above the search area, a sheriff's deputy at Vanderlip Park told neighbors that the woman was a frequent snorkeler and very experienced.
"On that first night ... it was quite a site," Ghabrial said. "Our homes here were fully illuminated by the helicopters and the frantic sounds of the workers in their boats directly below us. It was very busy here and very intense."
"That had continued through the night with just a short break of silence in the early morning."
Four divers with Baywatch Marina Del Rey were launched Sunday morning to begin sub-surface searches.
Rebecca Weiss is Asian with black hair and brown eyes, 5 feet and 5 inches tall and 115 pounds. She was last seen leaving her residence in the 13000 block of Marina Pointe Dr. in Marina Del Rey wearing a wet suit. She left the location in a black 2006 BMW X5, California license plate 5UEJ690.
