A naked man who ran away from a local mental hospital jumped into the harbor in Marina del Rey on Saturday afternoon and eluded law enforcement until he eventually became cold and tired and climbed aboard a patrol boat, officials said.

The incident occurred about 2:25 p.m. when officers from the Los Angeles Police Department attempted to detain an adult white male who had fled from a mental hospital while he was being evaluated as part of an involuntary psychiatric hold, Sgt. Jeffrey Olander of the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's Marina del Rey station said in a statement.

The man was naked and had a catheter and intravenous tube inserted when he ran into the unincorporated area of Marina del Rey and jumped into the harbor just west of the 4400 block of Admiralty Way near Tony P's restaurant, Olander said. The man evaded officers by swimming between docked vessels and under obstacles.

Sheriff's deputies in patrol cars and boats helped the LAPD make sure the man was safe while in the water. Officers made repeated attempts to coax the man onto the docks or onto the sheriff's patrol boats. The man eventually climbed aboard the swim step of one of the sheriff's patrol boats after becoming cold and tired due to the long exposure to chilly water, Olander said.

The man was detained by deputies and released to the LAPD officers after being evaluated by paramedics from Los Angeles County Fire Department engine companies 110 and 58.
