When Was the Post Office On Castro Street?

A seismic retrofit project reveals some Martinez history.

When Was the Post Office On Castro Street?

On the way downtown the other day, I happened to pass by the 600 block of Castro Street, across from La Tapatia. The seismic retrofit project has been going on at least a year, and renders the block a look not unlike what Berlin must have looked like right after WWII.

But in Martinez, these projects sometimes unearth signs and messages from days gone by. This project is no exception.

A look over the doorway of this building revealed a sign that read "Post Office Martinez Cal."

The post office on Court Street was built in 1936, so this post office clearly dates before that. A check with local history books revealed nothing.

So I throw it out for my readers: Does anyone know when this post office operated? Any information about what else was on this block?

Have it at, local history experts!
