Indiana Jones Comes in All Shapes and Sizes at MVFF34

At a 30th anniverary celebration and screening of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' a costume contest brings out an array of fedora-sporting, would-be adventurers.

"It's not the years, it's the mileage."

Thirty years after its original release, neither the years nor the mileage have diminished Raiders of the Lost Ark. A capacity crowd cheered as the famous adventurer/archaeologist Indiana Jones delivered the classic line during a 30th anniversary celebration and screening Monday night at the Century Cinema in Corte Madera as part of the .

The line of ticket holders, including an array of fedora-sporting, would-be adventurers, stretched around the outside of the theater, with a second line growing as fans hoped to get a late pass. Fifteen people in the rush line were lucky enough to get seats inside before the late rains came.

There were trivia and costume contests before the movie. The costume winners were an Asian man dressed as a villainous Gestapo agent, and a young boy dressed as Indiana Jones who stole the crowd's heart. No one in the trivia contest was even born when the movie was first released, so some of the answers were understandably — but amusingly — off the mark.

Who was the original choice to play Indiana Jones? "Uh, I don't know his name, but he played Han Solo in Star Wars." Well, Harrison Ford played both iconic characters. The correct answer, by the way, is Tom Selleck. Winners received movie posters and autographed books.

Once the movie started, everyone was along for the ride, from the jungles of South America to the deserts of Egypt. The audience was cheering with every knockout punch Indy delivered and cringing as he faced a roomful of snakes.

"Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
